FACTS

  • Spanned 8000 miles
  • Lasted 3 years
  • Down the Ohio River
  • To pacific ocean
  • Often called the Corps of Discovery

  • Endured harsh weather and dangerous conditions
  • Lewis kept a detailed journal and collected flowers
  • Reached the Pacific ocean in November 1805
  • Built Fort Clatsop and spent the Winter in present day Oregon
  • On the way back in 1806 L and C split up

  • They split in search of territory and faster way home
  • Lewis was shot in the thigh by one of his own men
  • They joined back up at the Missouri river and went to St Louis
  • Total expedition was roughly 8000 miles by foot, boat, horseback
  • Lewis received payment for his courageous efforts (land/governor)

  • Lewis tried to publish the journals he and clarke wrote on the adventure
  • Extreme circumstances forced them to eat dog meat
