Let Me Entertain You

Entertain me is the attitude some of us come to church with. Church is not all about us, it is so much more than what we can get. This sermon looks at what church is not, and what it is.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU

As church goers we have fallen into the trap of thinking that church is about us and what we must get out of it. We come to church expecting to be entertained and if we are not then we will go to a church that will give us what we want.

WHAT CHURCH IS NOT

  • Not a concert
  • Not karaoke
  • Not a Broadway show
  • Not a motivational seminar
  • Not all about you!
We have bought into an idea of what church is but many of our ideas are far from biblical.

KEEP THE SABBATH HOLY

EXODUS 20:8-11
One of the Ten Commandments is that we should keep the Sabbath holy. We are to keep one day in seven set apart to God. A day that belongs to God and which we will do no work. Sabbath means rest, but it also means reflect and review. On the Sabbath we are to worship God and allow time to reflect on our life and eternity. We are also to rest. Church is an opportunity for us to set the right tone for our day and use church as a reminder of who is in control of our lives and to whom our lives belong. This is not an optional commandment.

ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER

One of the reasons we meet on Sunday's and on other days through the week is so we can encourage each other to keep walking with God and to help each other to do the good works God has for us.

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2Timothy 3:16-17

The reason that preachers prepare sermons every week is not to make people feel good, but so that the gospel might be preached and church goers may be equipped to do what God wants them to. It is not a motivational talk, not a monologue that people should crit in terms of delivery but an opportunity to learn how to serve God better.

1 CORINTHIANS 12-14

WE ARE THE BODY OF CHRIST
The church is described as a body. It is not one organ giving to the parasites. It is about body that works together to do the mission of Christ. Too often we are like parasites only interested in ourselves.

COMMON GOOD

1CORINTHIANS12:7
Spiritual gifts are given to all who belong to Christ, why to help others not benefit ourselves. As we use the. For God glory and others growth we are benefited in our own growth, but that comes from a focus that is on common good.

I WILL SHOW YOU THE MOST EXCELLENT WAY.

1CORINTHIANS 12:31
The way in which we are called to live is through love. We come to church to love. We serve in the church motivated by love. Love is out ward looking, it is about giving not consuming.
