PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE MOVEMENT OF AIR

  • Wind is air movement from area of high pressure to low pressure, sun is the source of energy
  • Rising and sinking air forms convection cells, which make high and low pressure belts on Earth
  • Coriolis effect is curving of a path from a moving object

GLOBAL WINDS

  • Factors of global winds are pressure belts and Coriolis effect
  • Easterlies, westerlies, and trade winds are the major wind systems
  • Polar easterlies blow east to west, mid-latitude blow west to east, and tropical trade winds blow east to west
  • High speed winds in the upper troposphere are jet streams

LOCAL WINDS

  • Local winds are caused by differences in pressure
  • Sea breeze and land breeze absorb and release energy
  • Mountain and valley breezes are a result of the released energy
