Slide Notes

Wilkommen! (Welcome!) This is the first lesson in what I hope will become a series of lessons on German.

To get the most out of this course, you should not use the full-screen view, so you can see the side notes, the vocabulary, and the English translation of the slide. Unless you're not a beginner, I do not recommend the full-screen view! At the end there are a few Übungen (exercises), which I encourage you to attempt. This is the best way to master the material. Finally, you can go back to the beginning and try full-screen to see how much you remember. Mach Spaß! (Have fun!)

HIER IST EIN MANN. ER IST EIN JUNGER MANN.

hier ist = here is

eine Frau = a woman

sie ist = she is

junge = young

Note:

ein junger Mann = a young man

eine junge Frau = a young woman

HIER SIND ZWEI MÄNNER.

hier sind = here are

zwei Männer = two men

Note:

Congratulations on learning your first plural noun, 'Männer'!

Compare:

- ein Mann = a man
- zwei Männer = two men

This noun is a bit irregular, and so is the English plural form 'men'.

Translation:

Here are two men.

HIER SIND DREI FRAUEN.

drei Frauen = three women

Note:

Unlike 'Männer', 'Frauen' is regular.

auch = also, too

Note:

'Mädchen' is German for 'girl', but also for 'girls'! How does one distinguish between the singular and plural forms of this noun? By context. There are two girls in this picture, so it makes sense that 'Mädchen' should mean 'girls'.

Translation:

Here also are two girls.

ÜBUNG EINS:

This Übung (practice) is meant to be attempted after one has studied the lesson. Each sentence has several choices for you to fill in with the best correct word(s). Try to complete the sentence with the best word(s) and then translate the sentence into English. For example, the first sentence is: Der Mann ist (jung, alt, ein Kind). The only man in the slide is young, and the man is certainly not a child, so the correct answer would be 'Der Mann ist jung.' (The man is young.)
