LEADING TO WWI

SYSTEM OF ALLIANCES

SYSTEM OF ALLIANCE

Defensive military alliances that would only kick in if a country inside of the alliance was attacked by a country outside of the alliance.

DUAL ALLIANCE

In 1879 a treaty was created between Austria-Hungary and Germany.

Triple alliance: an alliance between Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary (1882)
Triple entente: an alliance between France, Britain, and Russia, for military support (1907)

The treaty was created so that the countries would band together in military assistance if Russia attacked.

FRANCO-RUSSIAN ALLIANCE

  • Treaty created in 1892
  • This alliance became the Triple-Entente in 1904
  • The Triple-Entente included the UK, France, and Russia
  • This is the one of the only times in history when Russia was on the winning side
