Published on Nov 19, 2015

6th grade Science lesson introducing the layers of the earth.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LAYERS OF THE EARTH

CONTINETNAL CRUST

LITHOSPHERE, ATMOSPHERE, HYDROSPHERE

CRUST

  • Outer layer
  • Lithosphere - land
  • Hydrosphere - water
  • Atmosphere - air
  • Continental and oceanic

CONTINENTAL CRUST

  • Rocky outer layer
  • Composed mostly of granite
  • 25 miles deep
  • We see mountains, rocks, soil,
  • Deserts, lakes, etc.

OCEANIC CRUST

  • Crust under oceans about 5 miles thick
  • Composed of basalt
  • Deeper into crust higher the temperature
  • Deepest part hot enough to melt rock
  • About 870 degrees Celsius

MANTLE

  • Second layer
  • Thickest layer -1800 miles
  • Heavy rock
  • Rocks melt in deepest part - 4400 degrees Celcius
  • Convection current moves plates around

OUTER CORE

  • Third layer
  • Molten iron and nickel
  • 1400 miles
  • 6,100 degrees Celsius
  • (Molten means melted)

INNER CORE

  • Fourth layer
  • Solid ball of iron and nickel
  • 800 miles thick
  • 13,000 degrees Fahrenheit
