TRIUMPHIAL ARCHES

The Arc de Triomphe, Paris

  • They are monumental structures shaped like arches.
  • The main structure is normally decorated with carvings or dedications to popular people.

  • The first recorded Roman Triumphal Arch was during the time of the Roman Republic
  • If a General did something honorable, he was able to have a triumphal arch built in honor of his victories.

THE FIRST ROMAN EMPEROR

  • Augustus changed the meaning of triumphal arches.
  • Only emperors were allowed to have them built.

ARCH OF TITUS

  • This arch was constructed after the death of the emperor, Titus
  • It was built to honor his capture of Jerusalem in 70 AD

Arch of Septimius Severus

Arch of Septimius Severus

  • It was built in 204 AD
  • It was built to honor the emperor and his two sons, Caracalla and Geta
  • They fought against the Partians in 195 and 203 AD.
  • This was made out of white marble.
