FIVE VERTICLE CLIMATE ZONES

  • Tierra Helada
  • Puna
  • Tierra Fria
  • Tierra Templada
  • Tierra Caliente

TIERRA HELADA

  • In English, this means "frozen land"
  • Found on the ice peaks of the Andes
  • Mostly snow and ice

PUNA

  • Puna could mean cold zone in english
  • Found in the Andes Mountains
  • Vegetation found is grass

TIERRA FRIA

  • This means "cold land" in english
  • Found in some of Latin America's largest cities
  • Good for growing potatoes and barley

TIERRA TEMPLADA

  • Means "temperare land" in english
  • Can be found in the lower altitudes of the Andes
  • Vegetation found is different kinds of evergreens
  • Coffee and corn are the main crops

TIERRA CALIENTE

  • Means "hot land" in english
  • Found between sea level oand 2,500 feet of the Andes
  • Bananas, sugar, and rice are the main crops found here

FOUR MAJOR CLIMATE ZONES

  • Tropical Wet
  • Tropical Dry
  • Humid Subtropical
  • Dry

TROPICAL WET

  • Found in north of South America
  • High temperatures and abundant rainfall year-round
  • Mostly trees and grass but lots more vegetation
  • The Amazon Basin is found in this climate zone

TROPICAL DRY

  • Found in the coast of southwestern Mexico
  • Also found in most Caribbean islands and north-central South America
  • These areas have high temperatures and abundant rainfall.
  • But also experiences an extended dry season
  • Mostly grasslands covered with scattered trees

HUMID SUBTROPICAL

  • Prevails over much of southeastern South America
  • Winters are short and cool, summers are long, hot, and humid
  • Rainfall is generally uniform throughout the year
  • Short grasses are the natural vegetation
  • Farmers plant alfalfa, corn, and cotton for crops to hold the topsoil in place

DRY CLIMATES

  • Found in parts of northern Mexico, coastal Peru and Chile,
  • And the southeastern coast of Argentina
  • Cold air and high elevation result in very little precipitation
  • Most vegetation is sparse, and the soil is poor
  • One geographic feature is the Atacama Desert
