  • On the following slides, I will show all the major cartels of the Mexican Drug War.

BELTRAN LEYVA

  • founded by 4 brothers
  • formerly aligned with the Sinaloa cartel
  • now aligned with Los Zetas against the Sinaloa, Gulf and La Familia Michoacana cartels.

GULF CARTEL

  • based in Matamoros, Tamaulipas
  • -------->
  • one of the most powerful

TAUREZ CARTEL

  • WAS aligned with Sinaloa Cartel
  • now fighting it for control of Ciudad Juarez and the State of Chihuahua

LA FAMILIA MICHOACANA

  • based in the Michoacan State
  • possibly defunct as of 2011

LOS ZETAS CARTEL

  • comprised of former elite members of the Mexican military
  • initially worked as hit men for Gulf Cartel, before becoming independent

SINALOA CARTEL

  • considered to be the DOMINANT drug trafficking organization in Mexico
  • led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman
  • MAP KEY: blue= Sinaloa Cartel's trafficking area in Mexico

TIJUANA/ARELLANO FELIX CARTEL

  • based in Tijuana
  • most of the Arellano Felix brothers have been apprehended or killed

IMPACT ON MEXICO

  • prevents complex economic activities from starting and growing
  • losing population due to homocides, and leaving the country for a better life
  • oil industry losing billions of dollars every year due to oil theft

IMPACT ON CITIZENS OF MEXICO

  • rate of deaths and dissappearances have risen
  • 7.6% increase in homocide rate in the country
  • unemployment rates spiked

IMPACT ON THE U.S

  • fueling the U.S. heroin epidemic
  • producing crime and violence
  • causing more harm to communities
  • rasing rates of deaths in overdose

IMPACT ON U.S CITIZENS

  • illegal immigrants are on the rise
  • creating more poverty and homocides

ACTIONS OF THE U.S GOVERNMENT

  • supplies Mexico with over$100 million per yearin military and police assistance
  • raised security on the border
