In 1905, Las Vegas was founded with the building of a railway station that was an important intermediate station between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.
In 1931 the next two crucial historical incidents took place, namely the beginning of the construction of the Hoover-Dam as well as the legalization of gambling.
The legalization of gambling and the dam, as a popular attraction, brought the first tourists to Las Vegas. It was not long before the first bars and hotels shot up like mushrooms.
Between 1930 and 1950 the first tourists were mainly workers, that enjoyed the gambling in-dustry as well as the prostitution and the expeditious weddings and divorces.
Around 1960 Las Vegas attracted also international tourists because of the first big theme hotels, casinos celebrities and musicians.
Today theme hotels are no longer interesting. They rather keep distance from such kinds of hotels and focus merely on the luxury segment, which should make more profit than the family segment.
Las Vegas is now trying to live up to an earlier success with the former “Sin City”. Gentleman's clubs and nightclubs were built and shows get more erotic with lightly clad actors
Regarding the future of the city, the next challenge will be to top and reinvent itself once more and to enthuse the future tourists much more than in recent days.
The city has united the world in the desert and has built an absolute phenomenon. Because of their “tradition-of-invention-thinking” Las Vegas has become one of the most popular tourism destinations with no own tradition.
What will happen with Las Vegas, when gambling gets legal in many other parts in the world? Will the city still be attractive? Concerning these considerations, Macau has already outbid-ding Las Vegas in terms of total gaming revenues.
