Laryngitis is an inflammation of your voice box (larynx) from overuse, irritation or infection. There are two types of this disease, acute and chronic laryngitis

  • Dry throat                              (1)
  • Sore throat
  • Weak voice and voice loss
  • Rawness of your throat

Diagnosis

  • Physical exam (Biopsy, Laryngoscopy)
  • Voice problems with unknown cause
  • Vocal cords

Hoe does a person get it?

  • Equal causes in women and men
  • Most common in African descent
  • Most common age is 18-40 
  • There is not genetic component
  • It can be influenced by environmental factors

Causes

  • Cold or the flu
  • Overuse of voice (cheering or yelling)
  • Acid reflux
  • Irritation from allergies or smoke
  • Environmental factors

Treatment

  • Resting your voice
  • Drinking lots of liquids ( not caffeine or alcohol)
  • Breathing humidified air
  • Do not whisper
  • Don't smoke or go near smokers

Affect life of family?

  • Have to make sure they are drinking many liquids 
  • Talk for them sometimes
  • Make sure they rest

Prevent

  • Don't smoke, avoid secondhand smoke
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid clearing your throat
  • Avoid upper respiratory infections

Prognosis

  • Minor and clears up in a couple of days or maybe week
  • Chronic could be serious and docter needs to be consulted
