Lanval/LDR

By: Jabril Robinson

True meaning

  • In Jonathan Swifts “The lady’s Dressing Room”, the idea of the “Chest” symbolizes death that has been found. The author talks about this chest, which is a symbol of a casket. The author refers the chest to Pandora’s box. Pandora’s box is a box that was given to this woman and told never to open it for she would release evil. In lines 81-82 “He lifts the lid to see no more he smelt it all the time before”, meaning wherever he found Celia once he lifted this lid he see and smells nothing but death. Also the author states (line 98) “Those secrets of the hoary deep” referring back to Milton’s paradise loft they are talking about death and the different levels of hades that this death is seeking (Hell).

Perspective from Another

  • The lady’s dressing room is the poem I will be refereeing back to, based off of another narrator’s point of view. The narrator I’ve chosen is Lanval. Laval’s characterizes him as being this trust worthy, loving man who is not afraid of death. How will this story be told differently vs. Strephon? Strephon describes the poem to be filthy on Celia’s point of view. When all actuality Celia is dead and hasn’t been revealed yet. Lanval’s point of view is the caring and trust worthy type. If Lanval was narrating this poem, he wouldn’t have reflected on Celia’s body in such a way strephon did such as “So Strephon lifting up the lid to view what in the chest was hid, the vapor flew from out the vent, but Strephon cautious never meant the bottom of the pan to grope, and foul his hands in search of hope”. If Lanval would describe such he wouldn’t make it into a mystery of what was before his eyes. Lanval would openly speak of Celia’s death and manage her body the right way not by putting a sheet which was considered the chest back over her. If there was any type of relationship that had to do with Lanval he would surely express his love for her rather than describing the looks of her dead body. Lanval would reminisce on the past of when her hair blew through the wind as he gazed in her beautiful eyes.
