Lalling or cooing

  • reflexive sounds babies make
  • mainly vowel sounds
  • throaty utterances

Babbling

  • Combining consonant/vowel sounds
  • Repetitive
  • Combines different syllables
  • practicing sounds of native language to later design words

Imitation

  • first imitates self
  • unconscious of first sounds
  • eventually becomes conscious of sounds being made
  • may imitate words with no meaning

Single Words

  • Production of meaningful word
  • has the same meaning with use
  • beginning of expressive language!

Jargon

  • practice conversational patterns of speech
  • not understandable speech
  • words may be present

Telegraphic Language

  • using 2 or more word sentence
  • conveys meaning with short phrases

  • Uses all words to produce thought
  • Able to produce longer utterances that make sense
  • Tells stories or conveys ideas

Expressive language is: words used to convey wants, needs, feelings, ideas
