VALLEY

  • A low area between hills, depression that is longer than wide.
  • Romsdalen in western Norway

PLAIN

  • Large area with flat land and few trees
  • Kansas

REEF

  • Ridge of jagged rock, coral, or sand just above or below the surface oth the sea
  • Great barrier reef

PLATEAU

  • Area of highland, usually consisting of flat terrain
  • Yellowstone plateau

ISLAND

  • Any piece of sub-continental land surrounded by water
  • Fiji

RIVER

  • Natural watercourse flowing towards another body of water
  • Mississippi river

LAKE

  • Water basin apart from any water outlet that feeds or drains the lake
  • Great salt lake

MOUNTAIN

  • Large landform that stretches above surrounding land in a limited area
  • Mount everest

STRAIT

  • Narrow passage of water connecting two large bodies of water
  • Denmark strait

PENINSULA

  • Piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water
  • Florida

ISTHMUS

  • Narrow strip of land connectng two larger land areas
  • Karelian isthmus

ARCHIPELAGO

  • Group of islands
  • Indonesia

CANYON

  • Deep revine between cliffs and most often sculpted by erosion
  • Great canyon

DELTA

  • Forms at the mouth of a river where it flows into another body of water
  • Delta of the nile

GULF

  • Deep inlet of sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth
  • Gulf of mexico
