What you Need to Know

  • Flinn Lab Safety Rules
  • Lab Safety Symbols
  • Equipment (name and use)
  • MSDS Sheets
See Lab Safety in the "ABOUT" tab of Google Classroom. Copies of all safety documents are located there.

Rules - be familiar with ALL of the lab Safety Rules on your Flynn Safety Agreement. Remember - you must return a signed copy before doing lab.

Safety Symbols - know what each symbol means.

Equipment - know the equipment in your drawer by name and how it should be used.

MSDS Sheet - Know how to read an MSDS Sheet.

Your Assignment

  • Make the first section of your notebook - Lab Safety
  • Page One - Rules
  • Page Two - Symbols
  • Page Three - Equipment
  • Page Four - MSDS Sheets
You are free to use resources other than Google Classroom, however LAB SAFETY has a copy of everything you need to complete the assignment.

Quadrant 1 - Lab Safety Rules

  • Read Flinn Safety Contract Rules - you have a copy to sign
  • Choose 4 Rules - most important to you
  • Summarize and illustrate each 
  • This should fill the entire page!!!
You are required to know the lab safety rules covered in your Safety Contract.

You must sign and return your printed copy but copies can be found online.

Your illustration of each chosen rule should be something that reminds YOU of the rule!!!! Each
illustration should also have the rule summarized in words.

Quadrant 2 - safety symbols

  • Study the lab safety symbols
  • Choose 6 symbols that relate to chemistry lab
  • Illustrate and Label each
  • This should fill the entire page
Safety symbols will often appear
on your lab instructions. You are responsible for knowing what precautions you should take when the symbol appears.

Quadrant 3 - Equipment

  • Choose 5 pieces of lab equipment from your station
  • Illustrate each piece
  • Name and describe the purpose of each
  • This should fill the entire page
Report to your lab station and take inventory of the equipment in the drawers and counter top. NOTE that it is arranged in a specific order and needs to be checked before and after you report to lab. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING OFF EQUIPMENT ANY TIME YOU ARE IN LAB. YOU WILL INITIAL THAT ALL EQUIPMENT WAS IN THE DRAWER AND CLEAN WHEN YOU ARRIVE. IF ANYTHING IS MISSING OR LEFT DIRTY - YOU MUST REPORT IT AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS - OTHERWISE YOUR GROUP WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.

QUADRANT 4 - MSDS SHEETS

  • Sketch the front page of a MSDS sheet
  • Label the location of the important info
  • Sketch the back page of MSDS sheet and repeat.
  • This should fill the entire page.
Use ' How to Read a MSDS Sheet"
to complete this assignment.

Your sketch should include the
layout common to all MSDS sheets -- not the details of an example.
