HALO

HELPING ART LIBERATE OPRHANS
HALO, founded by JCMO Native, Rebecca Welsh, seeks to employer youth in the greatest need to become contributing members of their communities..

HALO Jefferson City was started with a goal of funding the HALO Mengo home in Kampala, Uganda. This home provides food, water, shelter, clothing, education, art therapy, and mentors for 20 girls who once lived on the streets. The children at this home will be able to live a life without fear or worry about where their next meal will come from.

HALO recently opened a HALO Center for homeless and at-risk youth of Jefferson City. The center will serve as a safe-haven with future-focused programming and educational workshops.

Buddy Packs

THE FOOD BANK FOR CENTRAL & NORTHEAST MISSOURI
Approximately 25,000 students in The Food Bank’s service area qualify for free and reduced-priced school meals. For many of them, breakfast and lunch at school offer the only source of reliable nutrition and they are at risk of hunger over the weekend.

To alleviate this risk, The Food Bank partners with elementary schools in each of the 32 counties it serves to provide Buddy Packs to school children. Buddy Packs are backpacks filled with kid-friendly, nutritious food that students take home over the weekend or holiday periods to supplement their meals when there is not enough for them to eat at home.

During the 2012-13 school-year, the Buddy Pack program helped feed more than 6,600 children each week.

LIVE MUSIC

THIS YEAR'S LINEUP INCLUDES:
but before, during AND after. Hate waiting around for the race to start? Enjoy some tunes while you wait!

DIRT LEG BENDERS

Jefferson City MO's genre-bending American roots string band, The Dirt Leg Benders, have been spreading their "Home-grown" sound across the show me state. The 5 piece acoustic group combines folk, blues, ragtime and progressive bluegrass with Americana-infused rock and roll to make a sound all there own. D.L.B. is Stuart (guitar, harmonica, kazoo, vocals,) Scott (upright bass, vocals), JD (mandolin, vocals) Nick (banjo), and Gary (Drums, washboard).

MOON JR.

Deep in the Missouri Ozarks, an indie rock group formed that refused to be pigeon-holed as a small town, small sound band. Fusing elements of rock, indie pop, pyschadelia, and dirty blues, Moon Jr. has developed a sound which can only be described as “contagious”. After winning the 2011 KKID (92.9 FM)’s Battle of the Bands, Moon Jr. has gone on to entrance listeners in St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Memphis, been featured on the Fox 2 Morning Show in St. Louis, and embarked on a 2013 Midwestern Tour. As Josh Noe, DJ for KFLW the Fort (98.9 FM), aptly described the group, “Moon Jr. is what music should be. True musicians who love what they do.”

With intelligent melodies, tight harmonies, heavy groove, and an electric energy, Moon Jr. is capable of captivating listeners of nearly any genre. The group has shared the stage with bands of all backgrounds, including Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas (Detroit, MI), Old You (Charleston, SC), it! (St. Louis, MO), Not A Planet (Kansas City, MO), Seventeen Sisters (Champaign-Urbana, IL), and Modern Motion (Indianapolis, IN).

DRIVING WHEEL

The members of Driving Wheel might not be on a mission from God. But that doesn't keep them from existing as blues brothers, driven by a family vibe and a passion to perform for any crowd that will have them.

And many have delighted to do so — the band has played at Roots N Blues N BBQ festival, shared a recent bill with Tab Benoit and held hands with fellow local standouts such as The Mojo Roots. The duo that makes up Driving Wheel's core — guitarist Ryan Tomlinson and bassist Jeremy Hunsaker — has fine-tuned a sound that's indebted to torchbearers in the blues, Southern rock and alternative camps. Yet, to hear Hunsaker tell it, the pair's biggest musical influences are one another.

BOBBY SHOWERS BAND

Bobby Showers Band is a Jefferson City Missouri based 4-piece who' s genre is not always easy to define. Their latest release, Zero Sum Game, includes songs with roots, blues, reggae, and funk influences, all with pop hooks that make you want to sing along. As you can imagine, the band's live show is a nice mix of genres as well. It all comes together to create an original sound that makes people smile and move in a rhythmic fashion. The band consists of Bobby Showers on rhythm guitar and vocals, Dave Jordan on lead guitar, Jason Reimund on bass and Tom Reichart on drums.
