The colonies thought it was unfair the way the English were treating them, so, after many years, they wrote the Declaration of Independence.

In doing this, these 13, "small," colonies were going up against the strongest empire in the world.

Winning this war would not have been possible if Washington had not won some key battles.

Lately, Boston had been the center of most of the conflict, like the Boston Tea Party. Knowing this, the British seized this as their stronghold, shutting down the port.

Washington needed to take back the important port. But there was a problem. In order to lay siege, he needed canons, which he had, 300 miles away at Fort Ticonderoga. It was also the middle of winter.

One man said he could do it. That man, was Henry Knox.

Taking several weeks, Knox managed to take all 59 canons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. Promptly, Washington also appointed him general of the Colonial army's artillery.

Finally, the
Continental army could lay siege on Boston, but before they could, the English fled to Canada.

TO RECAP, THE BATTLE OF DORCHESTER HEIGHTS

was a key battle that influenced the war by recapturing Boston.
