I. WHEN AND WHERE

  • On Kent State University Campus
  • Happened on May 5, 1970

WHO AND WHY

  • 21 members of the Ohio National Guard
  • Students of the university and other local protestors of the Vietnam War
  • Police from that city and surrounding cities

I I. HOW IT HAPPENED

  • When President Nixon announced the bombing of Cambodia, the riots started
  • When it got out of hand Mayor Satrom called the Ohio National Guard to hepl
  • And Marshall Law was then announced
  • When the National Guardsmen arrived on campus, there was a crowd of 1,000 protestors
  • The protestors were yelling, "Pigs off campus!"

  • Next, the Guardsmen threw tear gas at the crow
  • When they thought they chased off the crowd, more came and surrounded them
  • When the Guardsmen started getting shot at, the Guardsmen started shooting at the crowd
  • After 13 seconds 4 students lay dead, 9 wounded including 1 Guardsmen who had been hit with a rock
  • A student named Dean Kahler was paralyzed for life, due to his injury

I I I. OTHER FACTS

  • The ages of the dead students are 2 twenty year olds, and 2 nineteen year olds
  • Days later, President Nixon said, "This should remind us all once again that when dissent turns to violence it invites tragedy. It is my hope that this tragic and unfortunate incident will strengthen the determination of all the nations campuses, administrators faculty and students alike, to stand firmly for the right which exists in this country of peaceful decent and just as strong against the result of violence as a means of such expressions."

  • The day before the shootings, the police made 63 arrests for being involved in the riots
  • The day of the shootings, exactly 67 shots were shot at the crowd

I V. AFFECTS

  • Hundreds of universities shut down for months because of this
  • Hundreds of claims of cover-up have been made
  • 4 decades later, some questions have not been answered satisfactually

  • The violence of this continued until Preside t Nixon signed the Paris Peace Accords of 1973

V. RESOLUTION

  • After this, the police have tried to find more peaceful ways to stop this from happening again
  • Which may save lives
