KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON

Paul Meyer
Hello, I am Paul Meyer, And I will be talking about the keep calm and carry on meme

Untitled Slide

This is the Keep Calm and Carry On meme. It is very simple, with a logo of the crown on top.

What is it?

  • It is a snowclone
  • It uses a very simplistic and minimalistic design
The Meme is a snowclone with a phrasal template with a logo on top. The design is very minimalist and simplistic.

Where it Came From

  • Created in WWII
  • Part of a set
The original poster was created as a morale propaganda poster for WWII, and it was part of a set of posters. The poster was never officially circulated by the British government.

Untitled Slide

These are the other two posters in the set. These two posters were circulated to raise the public's morale.
All three posters were created in 1939.

After The War

  • Forgotten for 60 years
  • Barter Books
The poster was never circulated, and ordered to be pulped in a post war recycling effort. A couple posters escaped, and a book store called Barter Books found a set of posters with a box of books they bought at an auction, and framed one of the posters. They sold like hotcakes.

AND

------------

This is the basic template for a Keep Calm Poster. The first two words go on the first two lines, usually the word and goes in the middle, and then two lines at the end. Normally a logo would also be placed at the top.

How To Replicate

  • Simple design on top
  • Phrasel Template
  • All Caps
  • One Color Background
  • One Text Color
The replication of the design is pretty simple. You put a minimalistic logo at the top, use the phrasel template for your text. The font should be bold, all caps, and one color, usually white. The background should be a solid color.

Untitled Slide

Here is an example of a dog themed rendition of the Keep Calm Poster.

Untitled Slide

Here is a Batman themed rendition. It does not use white text like most of the other parodies, and it uses a different background color. The template is very loose, so it works.

Untitled Slide

This is another version of the poster. It uses a different background color, and text, but it keeps everything else from the template.

What it is now

  • Mugs
  • Shirts
  • Posters
  • Almost Anything
The phrase has been adapted to a variety of other objects. Mugs, Posters, and Shirts are just a few examples.

Untitled Slide

Here is a mug that uses the phrase, but there are also other mugs that use parodies, like the keep calm and drink coffee mug.

This is a T-shirt with the template. It works really well with the T-shirt because the T-shirt is already the black color for the text to be imposed on.

Untitled Slide

Here is a framed poster. There are still a lot of posters with this meme on it because it originated as a poster. You can see that the poster has been changed to solicit kisses though.

Popular Culture

  • The Keep Calm App
  • Calm and Simple
The pop culture impact has been pretty significant, this meme even has its own app. I think that one of the reasons that it is so popular is how simple it is. It is easy to embrace and propagate.

Untitled Slide

This is a mashup that I really liked because it is the antithesis of the keep calm mindset. You can see that the picture of Boromir has been simplified for the picture to comply with the simplicity of the meme.

Present Day

  • Copyrighted
Present day Keep Calm is pretty interesting. It was actually copyrighted in 2007 in Europe. The Meme really gained popularity in 2009, during the economic crisis in England. It was used in a variety of ad campaigns shortly afterward.

ULTIMATE IMPACT

This meme is a great connection between generations. It brings together the modern digital generation that spreads ideas like viruses, and the WWII generation that lived through the greatest war of all time. This meme encourages a more simple mindset of carefree living.

Thank you for listening, and no matter what goes wrong in your presentation, Keep Calm, and Carry On.
