KARANKAWA INDIANS

HOME THEY LIVED IN

  • A. Small hut made of grass and wood
  • B. Teepee with animal skin
  • C. Mud home made of dirt and sticks

GOOD JOB!

  • A. Small hut made of long sapling tree trunks, limbs, and grass.
  • These were usually the winter or nicer homes.
  • They used animal skin on the inside for warmth too.
  • During the summer the homes were made of old dry wood with some moss on the inside to keep cool

REGION

  • There are four major regions of Texas.
  • Coastal plains, North Central Plains, Mountain Basin, and Great Plains
  • Do you know which one they lived in?

COASTAL PLAINS!

  • They mostly lived near Galveston and Corpus Christi
  • They were close to the Texas and Mexico border line.
  • They lived close to the Tonkawa indians too

KARANKAWA INDIANS WERE HUNTERS

  • Most of the men did the hunting in the tribes
  • They were experts with weapons.
  • For example, they used bow an arrows, spears, and flint knives.

FOOD

  • Because they live near the water they ate lots of seafood
  • Fish, shellfish, clam/oyster, turtles, and crawfish etc.
  • Also a variety of berries, plants, and some animal/meat.
  • All of these were a big part of there diet.

GOVERNMENT/SOCIAL STUCTURE

  • The Karankawa indians had a very weak government structure.
  • But they had groups of about 45 people headed by a chief
  • They use a lot of communication with smoke signals
  • The Coco, Copanes, Cujanes, Guapites, and Carancaguases were the main groups

ARTS

  • The Karankawa people had lots of "body" art
  • The men had lots of tattoos and piercings
  • The women painted there body differently depending on wether they were married or not
