World War II Begins

  • The next day President Roosevelt declared war on Japan, Congress approved Three days later, Japan with their allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

  • This was the start of WWI.
  • December 7th, 1941 This was the start of World War II in the Pacific. Hundreds of Japanese planes attacked the American Naval Base near Honolulu, Hawaii. Almost 2,500 men killed

Battle of the Coral Sea

  • May 4th-8th, 1942 Japan attempted to invade and control the Coral Sea. Japan targeted Port Mores-by in southeast New Guinea.

Damages of WWII

  • Americans sunk Japanese light carrier, Shoho. Japan’s Shokaku was damaged.
  • Air strikes led to the lost of America’s carrier Lexington. Yorktown was damaged as well.

Axis are Victorious

  • In naval history this was the first battle between aircraft carriers. Although the Japanese won again, this was a secret victory for the Americans. The two carriers Japan lost will greatly benefit the US in the Battle of Midway.

  • After losing many planes in ineffective strikes, the US
  • The US sent a fake message saying that they were sort of freshwater

Japan Retreats

  • Japan’s only surviving carrier, Hiryu, severely damaged Yorktown in response. Later that day Yorktown got revenge on Hiryu by sending dive bombers,

  • This victory stopped the spread of Japanese in the Pacific.
  • US losses: 307 men one carrier one destroyer over 100 air crafts

Iwo Jima

  • February 19, 1945 - March 26, 1945
  • 30,000 US Marines landed on Iwo Jima early that morning. 23,000 Japanese defended the island

Securing the Island

  • Marines used poisonous gas to successfully kill every Japanese soldier. There was no Japanese survivors 70,000 U.S. Marines and 18,000 Japanese soldiers acted in the battle. 7,000 U.S. Marines killed

  • Six Marine men place the United states flag on top of Mt. Suribachi. Harlon Block, John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, Franklin Sousley, Michael Strank, and Ira Hayes.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower¨Ike¨

  • Commanded the D-Day invasion while serving as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. In the winter of 1942, General Eisenhower led U.S. troops to defeat Axis forces in North Africa

Japan Refuses to Surrender

  • After Japan’s loss at the Guadalcanal they became even stronger. When Japan refused to surrender the US threatened that we would bring them “prompt and utter destruction”.
  • General Douglas MacArthur and other generals, planned the massive boming.

  • Hiroshima was the first target. Locating about 500 miles away from Tokyo with a population of 350,000 people. August 16th, at 8:15am, the atomic bomb was dropped
