The spies said the land was flowing with:
A: Pancake syrup
B: Water
C: Milk and honey

21 So the men explored the land . . . 23 When they came to the Eshcol Valley, they cut off a branch with only one bunch of grapes on it. They carried it on a pole between two of them. They also brought some pomegranates and figs. 24 So they called that valley Eshcol [Bunch of Grapes] because of the bunch of grapes the Israelites cut off there.

25 Forty days later, they came back from exploring the land. 26 They came back to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. They gave their report and showed them the fruit from the land.

27 This is what they reported to Moses: “We went to the land where you sent us. It really is a land flowing with milk and honey. Here’s some of its fruit. 28 But the people who live there are strong, and the cities have walls and are very large. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev. The Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the mountain region. And the Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and all along the Jordan River.”

30 Caleb told the people to be quiet and listen to Moses. Caleb said, “Let’s go now and take possession of the land. We should be more than able to conquer it.”

Ten spies said, The people are tall! Next to them, we look like . . .
A: ants
B: grasshoppers
C: shadows
D: children

31 But the men who had gone with him said, “We can’t attack those people! They’re too strong for us!” 32 So they began to spread lies among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored is one that devours those who live there. All the people we saw there are very tall. 33 We saw Nephilim there. (The descendants of Anak are Nephilim.) We felt as small as grasshoppers, and that’s how we must have looked to them.”

After the people heard the ten spies, they:
A: ate honey
B: complained
C: believed God

Then all the people in the Israelite community raised their voices and cried out loud all that night. 2 They complained to Moses and Aaron, “If only we had died in Egypt or this desert! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land—just to have us die in battle? Our wives and children will be taken as prisoners of war! Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 They said to each other, “Let’s choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

“The land we explored is very good. Don’t rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. . . . the Lord is with us.” Who said this?
A: Moses
B: Solomon
C: Joshua and Caleb

6 At the same time, two of those who had explored the land, Joshua (son of Nun) and Caleb (son of Jephunneh), tore their clothes in despair. 7 They said to the whole community of Israel, “The land we explored is very good. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us. This is a land flowing with milk and honey! 9 Don’t rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. . . . They have no protection, and the Lord is with us. So don’t be afraid of them.”

. . . The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to trust me in spite of all the miraculous signs I have done among them?. . .

[then Joshua said to the Lord,] By your great love, please forgive these people’s sins, as you have been forgiving them from the time they left Egypt until now.”

20 The Lord said, “I forgive them, as you have asked. 21 But as I live and as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, I solemnly swear that 22 none of the people who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I did in Egypt and in the desert will see the land which I promised their ancestors. . . . .But because my servant Caleb has a different attitude and has wholeheartedly followed me, I’ll bring him to the land he already explored. His descendants will possess it. 25 . . . . Tomorrow you must turn around, go back into the desert, and follow the road that goes to the Red Sea.”

GO!

In the story of the spies, God told Israel "Go!" and they said "No!" They did not trust God! When God said, "I want you to have this land," they whined and complained: "Are you trying to kill us? These people are giants! We're too puny! We can't do it! Waaaaah! I wish we were dead! Let's go back to Egypt. God hates us!"

How do you think God felt after hearing all that whining?

Do you guys ever whine? Do you ever hear yourself sounding like the children of Israel? Do you ever whine?

"I don't wanna! I can't do it! I wanna do something else! Waaaaah!"

Does whining ever help you get what you want?

Nooooooo.

You just get in big trouble, and it probably makes your parents pretty mad.

Untitled Slide

Whining made God very angry, and Moses had to pray for the people because God was so unhappy with them.

What happens when you whine? Do you get a time out?

The Israelites got a really long time-out. 40 years.

So, it's better to obey than it is to whine.

OBEDIENCE is better than WHINING

When your Dad says, "Get in the car; let's go!" What are you going to do?
Say, "Yes! I'm going!" Because OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN WHINING.

When God took Israel to the Promised Land and said, "Let's go!" They should have said, "Yes! I'm going!" Because OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN WHINING.

When God called Pastor Triplett to start a church in Clinton, he said, "Yes! I'm going!" Because OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN WHINING.

When God called Sis. Freeman to be a missionary to Africa many years ago, she said, "Yes! I'm going!" Because OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN WHINING.

Let's watch a movie about somebody who said "Yes!" to God and didn't whine.

I won't disobey God

even for a pile of money!
God called Bro. and Sis. Freeman to be missionaries to Africa, and Sis. Freeman was determined to go. She wouldn't disobey God, even for a pile of money. We've been learning how to have holy hearts and holy heads. A holy head is a made-up mind that you will obey God no matter what.

Holy Heads

GO WHERE GOD SENDS THEM!
Let's not be like the Israelites! Let us not disappoint God, but let's obey what He tells us.

In His word, He tells us that we need to repent, to be baptized in Jesus' name and be filled with His Spirit. Then, after that He will lead us where we need to go. Let's pray that we will have holy heads and always obey God no matter what.
