Joseph Pulitzer was a leader in the techniques of sensationalism in St. Louis and especially with the New York World. He then went on to create the SanFrancisco examiner.

In his newspapers Pulitzer combined political corruption and crusading investigative reporting with publicity stunts, and self-advertising. He made his newspaper the voice of the U.S. Democratic Party.
