  • born in Turin, Italy, as Giuseppe Lodovico Lagrangia
  • January 25th, 1736-April 10th, 1813
  • of Italian and French descent
  • eldest of 11 children but one of only two to live to adulthood

His father was was Giuseppe Francesco Lodovico Lagrangia. He was the Treasurer of the Office of Public Works and Fortifications in Turin. His mother was Teresa Grosso. His great-granfather was a French Calvary Captain who left his home in France and went to work for the Duke of Savory.

Lagrange's father wanted him to become a lawyer. He attended the College of Turin and enjoyed his Classical Latin class the most.

Becoming Interested

career

  • appointed in 1755 to be mathematics assistant professor at the Royal Military Academy of the Theory and Practice of Artillery
  • taught courses in calculus and mechanics
  • he was the first person to ever teach Calculus at an Engineering School
  • ultimately was a bad professor and didn't teach for a long time

contributions

  • Italian Enlightenment Era mathematician and astronomer
  • He made significant contributions to the fields of analysis and number theory
  • Also made contributions to Classical and Celestial Mechanics
