PRESENTATION OUTLINE

"MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE,

JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL LOVED TO FLY."

JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL

BY RICHARD BACH

THIS BOOK TAKES PLACE

IN AIR, OVER THE OCEAN, AND ON THE BEACH

THE MAIN CHARACTERS

  • Jonathan Livingston Seagull;
  • The Elder (Jon's Dad).

THE PLOT

  • Jon (Jonathan Livingston Seagull) is unlike any other seagull.
  • He likes to fly more than anything in the world.
  • Most gulls view flying as a way to get food.
  • Flying brought Jon joy, and he spent hours hours in the air practicing.

His dad wants Jon to be like the Flock, and be more seagull-like.
"If you must study, then study food, and how to get it. This flying business is all very well, but you can't eat a glide, you know. Don't you forget that the reason you fly is to eat."

A PLOT TWIST...

  • The Elder makes an announcement that he is leaving the flock.
  • He says he's going to help other Seagulls learn how to work together.
  • Everyone is surprised when he leaves Jon in charge!
  • So the Jon decides to join flight school to learn more than he already does about flying.
  • Eventually, the flight school leader leaves, too, and puts Jon in charge to teach.

Book Review

I enjoyed this book because it has an uplifting message about standing out and being true to who you are. It was inspiring the way Jon didn't care what the other gulls said. The way he was different was he loved flying more than anything in the world, and his father, The Elder, didn't approve. The Elder told him to be like the rest of the Flock. Jon said "I just want to fly high, and that is all."

(Continued)

Jon's dad had to face the fact that Jon is different than him, and that Jon was not going to change, no matter what. Jonathan tried to stop flying in order to make his dad happy and be more like the Flock. But, one day, he learned a new flying trick, and he breaks the promise to his dad and himself. He flies 8000 feet in the air, and just doesn't care because it felt right.

(Continued)

He was a very cool character in this book because he teaches that being different is okay. Eventually, he is recognized for this quality, and is made a leader and allowed to teach others in the flock. This would not have happened if he had not taken risks.

In this book, I learned that taking risks and being yourself are wonderful and great qualities for everyone, not just for Jon. I was inspired by this story and highly recommend it to everyone from ages 6 and up.😀
