  • He owned a feed and grain store, managed a flour plant,
  • and served as treasurer of Monterey County.

Steinbeck decided to begin writing when he was a freshman in high school. After high school, he worked off and on in many different jobs including a laborer in mills and ranch land. Steinbeck traveled a lot throughout his life. He used his experiences from traveling as inspiration for his novels.
