INTRODUCTION

  • John Quincy Adams was the 6th president
  • JQA attended school in Paris, Amsterdam, & Leiden. He also attended Harvard College.
  • He was a Lawyer & Writer, and he later turned to a political journalist.
  • JQA was appointed minister to the Netherlands

EARLY LIFE (1767)

  • Born July 11, 1767 in Braintree MA
  • Son of John Adams & Abigail Adams
  • Brother of Charles Adams &Thomas Boylston Adams
  • Lived

LATER FAMILY LIFE

  • Adams met his wife, Louisa Catherine, in London.
  • They married July 26, 1797
  • Children: Charles Francis Adams, Sr., George Washington Adams, & and O John Adams II
  • They had a daughter named Louisa that died during infancy.

CAREER/JOBS

  • Elected Massachusetts senate in 1802, & soon displayed an independence that marked his entire career.
  • Although federalist voted with Democratic-Republican JQA broke out with his party completely in 1807
  • Federalist in New England wanted to trade with the British, but Adams supported the Embargo Act.
  • So Federalist felt betrayed & elected another man in JQA's Spot. Adams resigned & prepared for a career as a Professor at Harvard.
  • From 1817-1825, Adams served as US Secretary of State.

EVENTS & ISSUES WHILE GROWING UP

  • While growing up JQA father, John Adams, was president.
  • JQA and his Mom watched the Battle of Bunker Hill from the top hill of their family farm.
  • Adams witnessed history. He was 22 when George Washington was elected President.

PRESIDENCY

  • JQA served 1 term (1825-1829)
  • Ran for president 10 times
  • Ran in the actual election 3 times.
  • Vice President: John C. Calhoun
  • Democratic-Republican

WHAT DID JQA DO?

  • JQA worked on developing the American system
  • Consisting of high tariff to support internal improvements.
  • Such: road building

LATER LIFE

  • After his presidency he stayed in Washington for a few months.
  • He later returned to his hometown, Quincy MA.
  • He was deeply bored by retirement, so he ran for MA congress.

DEATH

  • JQA died from a stroke on Feb. 23, 1848. (80 years old)
  • He was at his seat in the House Chamber when he collapsed.
  • He was placed on a sofa in front the east door in hope that the fresh air would receive him.
  • They took JQA to the Speaker's Office where he died two days later.
  • His funeral was held in the House Chamber.

DEATH CONTINUED.....

  • One of his pallbearers was a freshman congressman, Abraham Lincoln.
  • With him being a Unitarian, he is buried at First Unitarian church along with his father.

  • Minister in Russia at only 14
  • Suffered from depression.
