  • John Paul Jones was born on July 6, 1747 near Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
  • When he was 12 he worked on ships that carried goods, sailing from England to the American colonies.
  • John was named after his father who was a gardener.
  • Before John was working in the American navy he was in the British navy but he did not stay long.

  • John sailed from France to England, destroying ships and capturing the sloop or small sailing warship Drake.
  • The Bonhomme Richard which was Jones's ship made the British ship the Serapus surrender after a big battle.
  • The American colonies even made John Paul Jones lieutenant of the Continental Navy.

  • John also carried news of John Burgoynes surrender to France.
  • He even serviced on the Providence where he was the first command, the Ranger where he was captain and the Alfred where he was a lieutenant.

LIFE AFTER THE WAR

  • After the war John became an agent in Europe.
  • He briefly became an admiral in the Russian Navy.
  • He retired in Paris and died on July 18, 1792.
  • In France Louis XVI rewarded John with a gold-hilted sword and made him a chevalier or knight of France.

  • John was rewarded a Congressional gold metal in 1787.
  • John died when he was 45 from a brain tumor in 1792.
