John Paul Jones was born on July 6, 1747 near Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
When he was 12 he worked on ships that carried goods, sailing from England to the American colonies.
John was named after his father who was a gardener.
Before John was working in the American navy he was in the British navy but he did not stay long.

John sailed from France to England, destroying ships and capturing the sloop or small sailing warship Drake.
The Bonhomme Richard which was Jones's ship made the British ship the Serapus surrender after a big battle.
The American colonies even made John Paul Jones lieutenant of the Continental Navy.

John also carried news of John Burgoynes surrender to France.
He even serviced on the Providence where he was the first command, the Ranger where he was captain and the Alfred where he was a lieutenant.

After the war John became an agent in Europe.
He briefly became an admiral in the Russian Navy.
He retired in Paris and died on July 18, 1792.
In France Louis XVI rewarded John with a gold-hilted sword and made him a chevalier or knight of France.

John was rewarded a Congressional gold metal in 1787.
John died when he was 45 from a brain tumor in 1792.
