  • was placed in charge of his fathers mill in youth

  • Made many improvements in dressing batting and carding machinary
  • Recieved a patent for a "New Engine or Machine for Opening and Dressing Wool"

  • Woolen manufacturers quickly adopted the invention
  • Organized a club to avoid paying Kay a royalty

  • Shuttle was thrown through threads manually
  • Required two weavers seated side by side

  • shuttle was passed though threads machanically
  • Paddles were usd to shoot shuttle from side to side when a weaver jerked a cord
