JOHN GORRIE

BY DARIAN SALEHI

John Gorrie was born October 3, 1803 in Nevis. Nevis is 350 km east from Puerto Rico and 80 km west of Antigua. He spent his childhood in South Carolina. He died June 29, 1855 in Apalachiola. In the background is a picture of Nevis in the Caribbean Sea.

He moved to Florida in 1833 to study tropical diseases like yellow fever. He helped get rid of yellow fever in Apalachiola by cooling down the air. He purposely built an ice maker to this. What he built led to air conditioners and refrigerators. Yellow fever can also make your skin a little yellow. In the background is the difference between a person's hand without yellow fever and a person's hand with yellow fever.

John Gorrie was a physician, scientist, inventor and a humanitarian. Also in his community he was a council member, President of the Bank of Pensacola's Apalachiola Branch, Secretary of the Masonic Lodge, Postmaster and a vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church. When he died, people named a lot of things after him. In a place called Gorrie Square there is a museum named after him. Also in Gorrie Square there is a statue of him and his grave. In the background is a picture of John Gorrie's grave in Gorrie Square.

John Gorrie's father was a Spanish naval officer. His wife was named Caroline Frances Myrick Beman Gorrie. His son was also named John Gorrie. His daughter was named Sarah Gorrie. In the background is a picture of John Gorrie's father.

When John Gorrie grew up, he studied medicine in New York. He was very good at school. Lots of his teachers said that he was a promising student. He grew up to be a doctor.

I hope you enjoyed my project about John Gorrie.
