As a Representative of William &Mary from 1766-1770

which pledged to abandon importation of British goods until the Townshed Duties were repealed.

At which he sat on the committee that framed a declaration of rights as well as the plan for a new government

From 1776-1778

In 1779, by the legislature and soon took over the Chief Justiceship

By Washington in 1789, where he helped decided many important cases and resigned in 1796.

He was 68 and died a widower, his wife having died in 1792
