Gutenberg impacted history by creating a method of printing that made books cheaper and allowed more people to own books leading to different religious beliefs.

Backround

  • was an engraver in Germany
  • apprentice for a goldsmith
  • movable printing press in use in China
  • no knowledge "invented" it himself (Haber)
Gutenberg was origionally an engraver and he also was an apprentice for a goldsmith in Germany where he was born. Later on in his career he moved to France and started to work on this idea of a movable printing press. He was able to use his skills as an engraver to create mirror images of writing characters that when pressed on the paper they would create normal readable letters. Gutenberg was unaware, but at this time in China they already had a movable printing press, but Gutenberg made his own and was credited for inventing it.

"Because Gutenberg's press could produce books quickly and with relatively little effort, bookmaking became much less expensive, allowing more people to buy reading material"(Renaissance).

Cheaper Books

  • Book price down (less labor and supply and demand)
  • More people could afford (any class)
  • Made books popular
  • Used for more
Book price decreased due to a decrease in labor needed to create books compared to writing and coping them by hand.
With many more books being made the price for books went down due to supply and demand, the demand for books is much lower due to such a great supply of books.
Since books had a cheaper price that means that more people could buy them no matter what class they were in.
Books were no longer meant for just religion they were used for learning, entertainment, etc.

"Previously, during the Middle Ages, scholars had been guided by the teachings of the church, and people had concerned themselves with actions leading to heavenly rewards"(Renaissance).

Different Religious Beliefs

  • Church officials have books
  • People believed what they said
  • Copies of bible
  • Disagree with what priest say
Since usually only church officials had books and the majority of other people couldn't read everyone believed what they said and they tried to do what the preist said so they could get to heaven. When Gutenberg created the printing press he started off by making copies of the bible. Now that books are being made cheaper people began learning to read. People could now afford to have a bible in their house and when they read it they might begin to interpret it different than the preist, leading to different religious beliefs.

This is Gutenbergs bible also known as the 42 line bible. It is the first thing Gutenberg made with the printing press. This bible's pages contain two columns of 42 lines. These copies were made around 1452-1455. It is the oldest book made with the movable type technique(Harrley).

Conclusion

  • Printing Press -Cheaper Books -Different Religious Beliefs
Gutenberg's printing press impacted history by making books cheaper leading to different religious beliefs. Since it didn't take as much labor as writing the books by hand and due to supply and demand the price of books decreased. Now that there were more books and they were cheaper people began to learn to read. People were now able to read the bible and interpret it differently than the church officials might have before the majoority of people could read leading to different religious beliefs.
