- Joey's new teacher lets him do things like sharpen pencils instead of work
- Joey doesn't absorb information
- Joey gets distracted easily

- Took medicine to vomit but couldn't get the key out
- Went to get help "sitting still" but he thinks he doesn't belong there
- Joey felt like a "bad dog"
- Joey atoned by apologizing for being disruptive
- "...might just crack some sense into your Dad. She smiled after she said that."

MAKE A WISH
- Joey pooped out the key
- Went to Harold's in school birthday party
- Joey blew out Harold's candle because Harold couldn't, Harold was happy, but the parents were appalled
- Joey forgot his key at school and had to wait for his mom to get home
- "She was crying but I didn't know if it because she drank too much or if it was just the everyday sadness of her life with me."

WHO?
- The fourth and fifth grade classes went on a field trip to an Amish farm
- Joey wasn't allowed to eat the pie or carve a pumpkin, causing him to get upset and throw a carving knife
- After his tantrum Joey had to sit on the bus until the other kids were done carving pumpkins
- Instead of going to his time out, Joey snuck out and stole a shoofly pie, and ate the entire pie
- Joey ran all over the farm on a sugar rush
- Joey climbed to the top of the barn and jumped from the top into hay bales
- "And everyone else, teachers and parents and Amish, were all looking at me as if they were at the zoo and I was something in a cage."

GIFTED AND TALENTED
- Joey snuck into the gifted and talented meeting
- Joey decided to contribute to society and help
- He tried by making a million bumper stickers saying "HATE IS NOT A FAMILY VALUE"
- Joey ran with sharp scissors an cut part of Maria Dombrowski's nose off
- "Blood just poured onto the floor from the cut end of her nose and she stood there shaking with her eyes wide open..."

SUSPENDED
- After the accident, Joey, his mother, and Mrs. Jarzab have a meeting
- Joey gets suspended for six weeks and get mandatory counseling
- "You owe yourself, because if you don't pull it together now, I don't know what will happen next."

BAD SEED
- Went to apologize to Maria
- Maria's Dad answered and told him to get lost
- Her Dad said that Joey's mom was the problem, but Joey defended her
- "My mom is not the problem,' I shot back at him. 'I am"
- Joey gives himself a time out
- Joey and his mom go on a walk
- Joey's mom promises him a puppy if he does well in Special Ed

THE CROSSING
- Joey is greeted by the blue and white bus for children with special needs.
- The driver calls Joey a "foster child."
- Meets four kids on the bus, each with disabilities
- Joey debates running away, but he doesn't
- Meets Special Ed, who shows him around the school
- "What if I told you that your home life is part of the problem? We have to get serious now, Joey. It's time we look at the big picture."

SHIFTING GEARS
- Joey yells out everything Special Ed said to his mother when she got home
- Joey's mother starts drinking a lot, and gets frustrated at Joey and Special Ed
- His mother orders pizza, and while Joey tries to get vegetables and good food, but his mother argues against it
- "I'm shifting gears and making certain it won't happen again."
- Joey meets Dr. Preston who says he needs better meds

PITTSBURGH
- Joey is going to get an MRI in Pittsburgh
- Traveled in a Greyhound Bus
- We find out that Joey's grandmother psychologically abuses him to get him to behave, and to punish him
- His mother says that he will get a dog when he gets back home
- "...I kept bouncing from side to side and touching some people. "Sorry,' Mom kept saying to them. 'Sorry.' And for a second I thought, She is sorry. She is always sorry."

MOON MAN
- Joey goes to the hospital and gets an MRI
- Goes to the gift shop and spins the card rack over and over, getting cards everywhere
- Joey and his mother go to the top of the PPG building, and Joey finds telescopes with which he tries to find his father
- "The way she said home meant that it was our home. The one we had made without Dad. And it would never be his home."

THE PATCH
- Finds out that Joey's problem aren't "neurologically serious"
- Joey needs a transdermal patch to help his spastic behavior
- Joey needs to wear the patch for twenty-four hours
- Joey is part of a test program for the new drug in the patch
- "I just stood there thinking I was finally going down the right path to being better."
- Joey gets a Chihuahua named Pablo
