1916 RISING

The amazing civil war of Ireland

THE START

  • The 1916 rising was leaded by the IRB (Irish republican brotherhood) on the date of 24 April.

WHY

  • Ireland was splited by the rich mans in Britain and farmers were paying lots of rent to use lands
  • So they started to fight back.

MEMBERS

  • Irish Volunteers were ledded by MacNeill for Irish neutrality. The National Volunteers had 175,000 members, leaving the Irish Volunteers with an estimated 13,500.

  • The main members who started the war were

WAR MEMBERS

  • On the morning of Monday 24 April, about 1,200 members of the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army took down several locations in central Dublin.
  • And other county’s started a small fight of the civil war.

FUN FACTS

  • The seven members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood Military Council who planned the Rising were Thomas Clarke, Seán McDermott, Patrick Pearse, Eamonn Ceannt, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly, and Thomas MacDonagh. All were executed after the Rising.

FUN FACTS

  • 2 MacDonagh and Plunkett were poets. Pearse was a poet and writer as well as a schoolteacher.
  • 3 Thomas Clarke also lived in the US for long periods starting the Brooklyn Gaelic Society in 1902.

FUN FACTS

  • 4 5. Éamon de Valera, who participated in the Rising and later became a prominent figure in Irish politics, was born in New York and therefore an American citizen. This fact e saved him from being executed with his brothers in arms, though historians disagree on this point.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED

  • 590 people were killed during the Easter Rising 374 were civilians 116 British Soldiers 77insurgents and 23 members of the police forces. There were 38 children in total aged 16 and under.
