NAPOLEONIC WARS

  • During Jefferson's presidency, the Napoleonic Wars were going on
  • The United States were trying to stay neutral
  • The US traded with both Britain and France
  • The British began to impress US sailors to strengthen their navy
  • They targeted merchant ships, which were easy targets

RESPONSE TO IMPRESSMENT

  • The impressment of sailors angered Americans
  • Jefferson responded with the Embargo Act of 1807
  • This act ended all trade with Britain and France

RESULT OF EMBARGO ACT

  • It financially hurt many Americans instead of the British and French
  • Trade opened up between US and France again because of this
  • Britain was angered and blocked New York Harbor
  • Britain impressed more sailors, which led to The War of 1812
