BACKGROUND

  • December 7, 1941, Japan attacks American naval base at Pearl Harbor
  • December 8, 1941, USA declares war on Japan
  • December-January 1941-1942. American soldiers raid Japanese homes
  • February 14, 1942, Roosevelt orders all Japanese to be removed from Pacific Coast

What happened?

  • American millitary leaders felt Japanese were a threat
  • All Japanese were ordered off Pacific Naval Coast areas
  • Japanese were imprisoned, not killed
  • Japanese were denied freedom
  • All Japanese were not allowed to immigrate into the USA

What was the impact?

  • Japanese were denied common rights
  • People of Japanese descent felt restricted and un-American
  • Americans needed to pay Japanese victims
  • Horrible memories were left with the Japanese
  • Japanese felt as if they were not considered people

HOW HAVE THINGS IMPROVED?

  • Japanese are allowed to immigrate here
  • The US navy no longer thinks of Japanese as a threat
  • Japanese are granted all rights such as voting
  • The war ended meaning peace between countries
  • Americans gained a respect for Japanese descendants

HOW CAN WE PREVENT EVENTS LIKE THIS?

  • Understand that everyone deserves to be a citizen
  • People deserve second chances
  • Realize humans are equal
  • We can't assume things from a race
  • Think about being in other people's shoes
