THE GOVERNMENT WEAKENS

  • During the 800's the emperors power diminished
  • A long period of weak rulers came and the empire started to fall
  • Many of these rulers were only children, a government official known as
  • A regent would govern
  • A regent is a person who rules for the emperor because he is to young or sick

THE SAMURAI

  • To protect their land and enforce the, nobles formed private armies
  • To create their armies they gave land to warriors who agreed to fight for Japan
  • In battle samurai fought with swords, daggers, bows amd arrows, and on horseback
  • the word samurai means to serve
  • The samurai lived by a strict code of conduct calles Bushido

  • Bushido demanded a samurai to be loyal and devoted to Japan
  • A samurai would rather die in battle than to betray his lord

WHO IS SHOGUN?

  • By the 1100's the most powerful families began to fight
  • The two families were the Taira and the Minimoto
  • In 1185 the Minamoto forces defeated the Taira in a sea battle
  • The leader of the Minamoto was Minamoto Yoritomo
  • In 1192 the emperor gave himself the title shogun

SHOGUN CONTINUED

  • A shogun is a person in charge of all the emperor's military forces
  • Yoritomo was a ruthless ruler, he killed his family because he was afriad that..

THE MONGOLS ATTACK

  • In the late 1200s the Kamura shogunate faced their greatest test
  • In 1274 and again in 1281, China's Mongol emperor Kublai Khan...
  • Sent ships and warriors to invade Japan
  • Both times Mongols were defeated because of violent storms
  • The few Mongol warriors who made it ashore defeated the Japenese
