MATTHEW PERRY

  • Commodore of the United States Navy.
  • Leading role in the opening of Japan to the West.
  • Was considered "The Father of the Steam Navy".

Foreign Pressure - controlling several different nations.

Japanese Reaction - upset.

Treaty of Kanagawa - opened Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to United States trade.

SAMURAI REVOLT: DISAFFECTED SAMURAI AGAINST NEW IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT.

Mutsuhito - emperor Meiji.
Meiji - 122nd emperor (1867 - 1912)
Edo - former name of Tokyo.

Meiji Restoration - events that restored practical imperial rule to Japan.
Motto - "A rich country, a strong military."

1889

Meiji Transformation - they became more modern.
Zaibatsu - large Japanese business conglomerate.

1894

SINO-JAPANESE WAR: WAR BETWEEN QING DYNASTY AND MEIJI JAPAN OVER CONTROL OF KOREA.

1904

RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR: RUSSIA VS. JAPAN OVER MANCHURIA AND KOREA.

Treaty of Portsmouth - ended the Russo-Japanese War, signed on September 5, 1905.

1905-1940

Japanese took control over Korea.
March First Movement - occurred on March 1, 1919. "Three-One Movement"
