JANE ADDAMS

ADDAMS' BACKROUND

  • Born into wealthy Quaker that valued learning
  • Born in Cedarville, Illinois in 1860
  • Attended Rockford college, getting a bachelor's degree
  • Went to Medical school, but quit due to her bad health

EXPERIENCES IN EUROPE

  • 1880's traveled throughout Europe
  • She found toynbeen hall, a settlement house in Londan
  • Liked the idea and opened a house in America; named a Hull-house

THE HULL-HOUSE

  • Opened Hull-house in 1889 on the west side of Chicago
  • It provided welfare, education, and recreational services throughout neighborhood
  • Wanted to learn about problems that faced those in poverty
  • Conducted surveys in Chicago, learning more about poverty

HER RESULTS

  • 1895, published her results; called the Hull-house Maps and Papers
  • The book talked about wage levels, sweatshops, child labor, immigrant experiance, and living conditions
  • Her work opened the window to discussion about industrialization and urbanization

AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY

  • Member
  • She spoke at national conferences
  • Contributed to American Journal of sociology
  • Not much support from fellow sociologists
  • She lived and worked with her subjects; she was considered a social worker rather than a sociologists
