JAMES VAN DER ZEE

He was born on June 29 1886 in Lennox MA

He is best known for his portraits of black New Yorkers

He took his photos during the Harlem Renaissance. This what made him very well known.

He produced one of the best documentations of the period.

Among his better known subjects were Marcus Garvey, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Countee Cullen

Van Der Zee used several different techniques to get the perfect photo. He used techniques such as retouching negatives, and combining several photos into one image.

On May 15 1983 he died at the age of 93. He was one of the leading figures in the Harlem Renaissance.
