PRESENTATION OUTLINE
HI MY NAME IS JAMES MARSHALL
One day in 1848 I was just building a sawmill on the American River and I saw something shining in the water. I reached for it and I instantly knew I had just
found gold.
Soon it was leaked that I had found gold and people were rushing to come and find gold for themselves. By 1849 tens of thousands of gold seekers had joined the California gold rush.
By the time the gold rush was over in 1852 I bet there had been over 250,000 people who had come to California and they were called the forty-niners.
While everyone was now getting gold it made the economy go up. People would pay for things with gold or gold dust.
This also had a bad affect on the native people of California.
The Californios lost their land to all of the newcomers.
For California's Indians this invasion was dreadful. Warfare and disease decreased their numbers greatly.
In the end the gold rush was good for America. It propelled the creation of California as a state.
