BIOGRAPHY

  • Name/Nickname : James Knox Polk or "Young Hickory". Birth : November 2, 1795 at Mecklenbury County, North Carolina. Education : He graducated from University of North Carolina in 1818. Death : June 15 , 1849 at Nashville, Tennessee.

PRE-PRESIDENT

  • He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives for two years.
  • He served 14 years in the U.S House of Representatives from Tennessee's Sixth District.
  • Polk was a speaker of the House.
  • Polk was elected to be the governor of Tennessee.

PRESIDENT CAMPAIGN PROMISES

  • He reduce tariffs ( attacks on imports or exports).
  • He would settle the Oregon question.
  • He will buy California and New Mexico from Mexico.
  • He wanted to establish a subtreasury.
  • He promised to retire the office after 4 years or one term.

CAMPAIGN ISSUES

  • Territorial expanison
  • Slavery
  • Banking
  • Tariff ( a tax or duty to be paid ).
  • Not an imaginative statesman
  • Not a healthy youth which weaken his body and mind.

HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESIDENCY

  • July 1845: New York Jacksonian Democrat and John L. O'Sullivan accuses opponents of Texas annexation.
  • May 13, 1846: Congress declares war on Mexico.
  • June 15, 1846: The Oregon Treaty suggests the border between British and American is at the line 49th parallel.
  • July 29, 1846: Congress passes the Tariff of 1846.

Post Office Accomplishments

The presidency left him in poor health and 3 months later he died from exhaustion on June 15 at age 53.
