James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States.

President Buchanan served his term just before the American Civil War. He tried to maintain peace between the two opposing sides, but his efforts were not successful.

James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1971 in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania.

Buchanan began his career in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1814. He was a member of the Federalist Party.

Buchanan was the only president to remain a bachelor throughout his life. He did not have a First Lady.

In 1818, at a ball, Buchanan met Anne Caroline Coleman. The two became engaged, but Anne eventually broke off the marriage. Soon after, she died.

Buchanan was the last president born in the 18th century.

Buchanan was the second oldest president to be elected. He was 65.

James Buchanan died on June 1st, 1868 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
