OPERATION NAME

  • Operation Husky
  • This was the code name for the invasion of Sicily

KEY PEOPLE

  • General Dwight d. Eisenhower-supreme commander
  • General sir Harold Alexander-ground commander
  • George Marshall-planned the stages of the operation
  • Clark, Patton, Alexander, and Montgomery all affected the Outcome

SUMMARY

  • Britain and the United States decided to invade Italy in 1944, with the hopes of taking Italy completely out of the war
  • By getting rid of Italy, the allies could dominate the Mediterranean Sea and it meant that Germany would have to transfer its troops to defend Italy
  • Beach landings and land battles by the allies from Sicily to the Italian mainland right to nazi Germany
  • The allies drew German troops to Berlin

  • The allied forces went across po valley in Italy and two days after Berlin collapsed, making German forces surrender
