PRESENTATION OUTLINE

How can teachers replace existing practices in their curriculum with the time needed to make the necessary changes?

Topic and Question

What encouraged you to investigate this topic?

I decided to choose this question and topic because I found in my observations, discussions and previous research that time seemed to be the largest obstacle and fear that was stopping teachers from implementing necessary changes into the curriculum. As a person that is interested in academic supportive roles, I found it both intriguing as well as helpful in my career to explore how to support teachers and provide them with the tools they need and the inspiration they need to bring their curriculum up to the standards required as well the changes needed for our 21st century learners.

What were some of the Q's you had

when you first started investigating this topic?
Not currently being in a teacher position or in the field in which I would have regular exposure to this position, my biggest question was about the duties and responsibilities that teachers have that keep them from focusing on curriculum change. From there I also had questions about the Common Core Standards and how this effected teacher's current curriculum. FInally, although I've seen and heard about teacher's reactions to standards and changing their curriculum, I wanted to explore further why many teachers still have a fear of changing their curriculum and what the underlying attitudes were towards this.

How did you go about the research?

I was inspired by this course's Curriculum 21 required course material. Where the author shared a scenario in which a teacher spoke up to say that it's not that they (as teachers) are resisting the new approached, it's just that they want to do it right and this is difficult with the meeting guidelines and testing cycle expected of teachers already. With that I am looking to take both a theory approach by exploring self-efficacy and its role with teachers hesitation towards curriculum change, along with getting a better understanding of what resources and are out there for teachers and what will them.

What other secondary Q's did you begin to develop?

  • What is the common attitude and perception towards curriculum change?
  • Can Curriculum change be done within the regular working hours?
  • How can curriculum development be less stressful?
  • How can we ensure that technology integration is happening as well?
These are the key questions that will be guiding my final presentation. I am interested to first get an overall understanding of what the mental road blocks are for teachers and then determine how this can be changed. I also want to make sure that the important of technology integration is included in this along with Common Core Standards.

What have you learned thus far?

Where are you going with your research from this point on?
SO, far I've learned that a change in vocabulary and the presentation of curriculum changes can affect teacher's negative perspectives. Taking approaches such as curriculum mapping can be helpful. That yes, teachers do A LOT in a day!

This is only scratching the surface, I hope to explore all of these findings further, have more concrete research and information to back up my own opinions and thoughts on how to answer the overarching question.

How do you see this as a worthwhile endeavor

that will add to educators' knowledge?
I certainly think that by researching on the approaches, resources and tools available to help teachers take on the endeavor of updating their curriculum, this will in turn by a worthwhile endeavor for me. As a person very interested in supportive roles in education, I very much look forward to completing this assignment with a much better understanding of the struggles and problems in education (particularly in curriculum development) and ways in which we can begin to solve them.
