PRESENTATION OUTLINE
1.
ISLAMIC CULTURE
JORDAN AND SOFIA
2.
TRADITION
All islamics should go to school but most of the time, males go more than females.
Parents believe that sons will benefit more from a education then daughters.
Most young people in the culture do not engage in courtship/dating before marriage.
Men are allowed to commit “honor killings” without any justification really.
3.
MARRIAGE
Islam values marriage highly and parents basically give daughters away.
Islam permits polygamy.
A bride has a right to a gift of money.
Men are allowed to rule over their wives as well as use physical violence (discipline) against them.
The husband gets to take custody of the child even if they are divorced.
4.
DRESS
Women dress laws are MUCH stricter than men’s.
Some women in moderate countries dress less conservatively.
Muslim women are not treated as equals.
Some women choose to cover themselves completely.
Islamic nations regulate women’s dress differently, not everyone agrees the same.
Women often find ways around the dress codes.
5.
THE PUBLIC SPHERE
Most women are encouraged to stay home while men go out.
In Afghanistan, women were not allowed to work.
Men and women have equal power.
Women have little political influence
Islamic beliefs are changing in the modern world
Liberal Muslims want life to change, they believe in equality for women and they don’t agree 100% with the Taliban or the Qur’an teachings.
