Islamic beliefs and practices

Qur'an

  • Contains Muhammad's teachings
  • Said to contain the exact word of God
  • Also has Muhammad's words and deeds
  • It describes acts of worship and rules for social behavior

Beliefs in the qur'an

  • Allah is the only God.
  • Muhammad is God's prophet.
  • The world had a definite beginning and is going to end.
  • People who obey God's orders will live in paradise.
  • People who don't obey his orders will suffer

Guidelines for behavior

  • Muslims should wash themselves before praying
  • Shouldn't eat pork or drink alcohol
  • Describes the rights of women
  • Jihad- the struggle that people go through in their lives

Sunnah

  • The written record of Muhammad's actions.
  • It is contained in the Qur'an
  • It provides a model for the life expected for Muslims
  • Also, it guides Muslims' behavior.

Five pillars of islam

Statement of Faith, Prayer, Donation, Fasting, and Hajj

Statement of faith

  • "There is no God but God, and Muhammad is his prophet"
  • Muslims have to say this when they accept Islam
  • Have to say it once in their lives.
  • 1st pillar

Daily Prayer

  • Muslims must pray 5 times a day
  • Must pray at sunrise, midday, afternoon, sunset, & bedtime
  • Each time someone prays, a call goes from a mosque.
  • Prayer is the proof that someone accepted Allah.
  • 2nd pillar

Yearly Donation

  • Muslims must pay money to a religious official
  • The money is used to help poor people.
  • Helping others is important for Muslims.
  • 3rd pillar

Fasting

  • Muslims must fast during Ramadan
  • Can not eat/drink from dawn to sunset
  • Fasting shows that God is more important
  • 4th pillar

Hajj

  • Pilgrimage to Mecca
  • Have to go once in your life
  • Kaaba is Islam's most sacred place
  • 5th pillar

How did these practices change daily life

  • Qur'an and Sunnah form the basis of Islamic law
  • The Islamic law is known as the Shariah
  • It sets rewards for good behavior
  • Sets punishments for crimes
  • People will watch the way they act so they can have rewards
