START OF RISE
MUHAMMAD WAS BORN IN 570 CE.
HE CLAIMED TO HAVE BEEN VISITED BY AN ANGEL SPREADING THE WORD OF ALLAH.
AIDED BY BEDOUIN TRIBE Muhammad WAS ABLE TO MAKE A MILITARY CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE the Meccans AND ARAB TRIBES.
IN 630, 2 YEARS BEFORE MUHAMMAD’S DEATH, MECCA FELL TO ISLAM.

EARLY EXPANSION OF ISLAM
Islamic followers started their expansion in the early 630’s.
Initially moved against Byzantine and Persian empire.
Captured much of the east, including city of Jerusalem.

ISLAM IN SPAIN
During the 8th century Muslim forces crossed from North Africa to conquer spain and Portugal.
In 711, Islamic forces defeated the Visigoth king Roderick .
In 712, additional conquests were launched against Spanish towns.
Soon, Spain was conquered and given a new name: Andalusia.

AFTERMATH OF ISLAMIC EXPANSION
Islamic expansion reached places as Far East as india and as far west as europe.
Conquered territories adopted sharia law.
Jews and Christians could still coexist, as long as they paid a special tax known as the ‘jizya’.

INFLUENCE OF ISLAMIC EXPANSION TODAY
Islam today is the second biggest religion, only behind Christianity.
Many countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Iran have governments based off of sharia law
Islam, even today, is very prevalent in the world.
