• Islam is a monotheistic religion
• Regarded as taught by Muhammed
• Islam means surrender/submit (will to god)
• Developed in the 7th century
• Based on the teachings of Muhammed

• Based on the belief that Allah is one true god
• Very little is known of pre-Islamic Arabia
• There were many tribes
• They had polytheistic religions
• To become Muslim, you must give Shahada

• In 622, he and his followers migrated to Medina
• Within ten years he returned to and conquered Mecca
• The Quran is the sacred text of Islam
