Learning Spaces

Slides: http://www.bobpearlman.org/isacs.htm - many videos and other resources showing what schools are doing in this area

Two things to think about: pedagogy and space. How does pedagogy change when space changes? What comes first?

Language
Buddies

Like reading buddies, but with foreign languages. One school is doing this with much success. Activities include designing and playing vocab games, celebrating holidays, reading books, and writing and drawing their own book (they used StoryBird).

The Narrative Pebble of the Calculus

  • doesn't have to be just English/history or science/math
  • start small
  • use language & stories from other subjects
it's ok to not get the language right - use "pidgin" & don't be afraid
--> teachers don't have to be the smartest person in the room
gets international students to "buy in" to non-math/sci subjects by showing connections to math
there's not always a "neat" solution

Character Development through Problem-Based Learning

Character traits that run throughout the entire school: from language in the classroom to written grade reports, not just marketing material.

Should we be doing this with our core values?

&
Digital Citizenship

Our message to kids should be to approach adults when they make mistakes, not to NOT make mistakes. We need to give this message over & over.

Leadership: what do kids think a leader is? does their feeling about what it is prevent some kids feel lesser?
Should we be using "passion" instead - leadership is the byproduct of the passion.

Kids shouldn't be presenting at more than 4-6 out of 10 on a scale of discomfort.

Measuring Student Engagement

Analysis like this is happening all the time in the real world (Twitter sentiment analysis)

They used all this data to convince teachers to rearrange rooms, change body language, try new pedagogy, etc. Also chose what to focus on for PD, how to set schedules, etc.

What does engagement mean for us?

Big finding... classes where students had choice & voice had more engagement!
